Mental health disorders like depression, anxiety disorders and disordered eating are at least as common among football players as in the general population. Traditionally, there has been substantial under-reporting and inadequate treatment of these problems. Recent efforts to raise the awareness of these problems in a football context will hopefully mean that football clubs and associations introduce policies to educate players, coaches and administrators about mental health disorders and will see more successful future treatment.
