Born in the Czech Republic, graduated in medicine 1976 Zurich. Awarded the “Venia Legendi” from the University of Zurich for the original work on the “upper cervical spine” – speciality “Neurology”. 1995 Professor at the University of Zurich. Senior Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine and Deputy Editor of SPINE. Widely published with 365 original articles and 48 books in various languages. Current research activities focus on the prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases. 1994 became the Chairman of F-MARC (FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Centre) and FIFA Chief Medical Officer. He has been in charge of the medical organisation for the past six FIFA World Cups.
